—Captain James T. Kirk
Star Trek: The Original Series—Volume #3, Episode #6, “The Man Trap”
Airdate: September 8, 1966
Pulling quotes from the original Star Trek episodes is like eating pistachios — once you start, you just can’t stop. Did the script writers realize how hilarious these lines were, in or out of context?
I thought I’d introduce my kids, 10 and 5, to something more wholesome than Wizards of Waverly Place, so I popped in this Star Trek DVD. Whoa, Nellie. As a kid, I guess I never realized how sexually charged this show was. Or sexist. In another episode from the first season, “Charlie X,” an adolescent sociopath boards the starship and creates what today would be considered a hostile work environment — spanking one of the yeoman “girls” and then vaporizing her as he wreaks Carrie-esque telekinetic havoc. Kirk dismisses “the swat” and chuckles appreciatively. But before you can get too annoyed, the young William Shatner strips down to his wrestling tights (complete with undie lines) and struts around topless. Those were the days.
